Adopt a Home: Supporting Safe and Welcoming Homes for People with Disabilities

A home is so much more than four walls and a roof.

It is where friendships grow, favorite hobbies are enjoyed, inside jokes are born, and people feel safe, comfortable, and truly themselves.

Through our Adopt a Home spring appeal, Systems Unlimited is raising funds to make important repairs to two homes that support people living with developmental disabilities. These updates, including new siding, safer windows, driveway repairs, and other improvements, will help ensure the people who live there can continue enjoying the homes they love for years to come.

The Iowa City House

Walk into our Iowa City home and you’ll quickly discover that while the three men who live there have very different interests, they fit together perfectly.

Bradly can tell you just about anything you want to know about Pokémon, anime, or video games. If there is a new game release or a Pokémon question, he is the expert.

Brandon is happiest when he is outside. Be it fishing, attending community events, or exploring new places. He is always ready for an adventure and often invites staff to join him along the way.

Aiden brings energy to the home through his love of Disney and sensory experiences. He can often be found enjoying his swing in the backyard or playing with his favorite sensory items.

Together, these three men have created a home filled with personality. The large yard gives them space to enjoy the outdoors, and the house provides room for each person to pursue the hobbies they love.

After nearly 50 years, though, this home is beginning to show its age. Some of the main repairs needed include aging siding, worn windows, and a deteriorating driveway need attention so the house can remain safe, welcoming, and truly theirs.

The Marion House

There is something special about the Marion house.

Spend just a few minutes there, and you will see it. The four men who live together genuinely enjoy being together. They joke back and forth, pull harmless pranks, cheer each other on, and have created a home filled with laughter and friendship.

Each person brings something unique to the house.

Michael enjoys looking his best. He loves styling his hair, trying different hair products, and talking about colognes. If there is a chance to dress sharp, he is all in.

Adam is the sports enthusiast of the group. Whether he is talking hockey or sharing stories about hunting trips with his family, he is always ready for a great conversation.

Marty keeps everyone laughing. He is known for joking with staff and housemates, and when he is relaxing, you will often find him playing his bowling game on the computer or battling zombies in Resident Evil.

Owen is always on the move. When home, he stays busy with his model trains and can happily spend time talking about one of his favorite movies, How to Train Your Dragon.

Together, they have turned this house into far more than a place to live. It is a place where personalities shine and everyone feels at home.

The house itself, however, is in need of some needed repairs. It needs new siding, safer windows, and improvements so it can remain the safe, comfortable home these four men deserve.
