On May 1, Systems Unlimited held its annual Awards Celebration and Prom, generously sponsored by MidWestOne. The event is a special evening where the people we serve and staff come together to celebrate accomplishments, enjoy time with friends, and dance the night away.

One of this year’s recipients was Scott Wieser, who received a Milestone Award. This award recognizes an individual who has achieved a significant lifelong goal, and Scott’s story is a powerful example of determination and advocacy.

Scott, who uses a wheelchair, enjoys taking walks independently in his neighborhood. For many years, however, the lack of a sidewalk on his street made doing so difficult and, at times, unsafe due to traffic patterns. Rather than accepting the situation, Scott chose to advocate for change.

Over the course of 25 years, Scott persistently contacted the City of Iowa City through emails, phone calls, and community outreach. He also encouraged friends and supporters to join him in advocating for a sidewalk in his neighborhood.

His perseverance paid off. The city ultimately installed the sidewalk, making it possible for Scott to safely enjoy walks whenever he chooses. The improvement has benefited not only Scott, but the entire neighborhood. Families now regularly use the sidewalk, and many stop to greet him as they pass by.

“I usually don’t like to get credit for things, but this was really hard,” Scott shared.

Today, the sidewalk serves as a lasting reminder of what can be accomplished through persistence and self-advocacy. When asked what advice he would give others working to create change, Scott’s answer was simple:

“Just don’t give up!”
