Legislative Session Update & Advocacy Efforts

At the beginning of this year’s legislative session, state legislators indicated that Medicaid Waiver providers, including Systems Unlimited, would likely not receive funding increases. Despite strong advocacy efforts from organizations, families, and supporters across Iowa, the legislature ultimately maintained that position.

As the session concluded, the Iowa DD Council released its End of Session Report, which highlights several important bills affecting disability services and supports across the state.

Advocacy at the Capitol

On April 1, a group of people supported by Systems Unlimited traveled to the Capitol for an advocacy day. During conversations with local representatives, legislators encouraged agencies to begin developing educational materials for incoming legislative leaders, as changes in leadership are expected with the next governor’s administration.

Help Us Share the Importance of Medicaid

To help future legislative leaders better understand the impact of Medicaid services, we are inviting people we support, along with parents and guardians, to share short videos or photos describing how Medicaid has positively affected their lives.

Examples could include:

  • “My child was helped by Medicaid because they are now able to live in a home near us and visit family regularly.”
  • “My child loves their job, and they would not have been able to find or maintain employment without Medicaid support.”

Videos can be brief and recorded directly from your phone. Photos are welcome as well.
