Celebrating 54 Years of Service in Eastern Iowa

This July marked Systems’ 54th anniversary of providing quality services across Eastern Iowa — and wow, what a journey it’s been! It’s hard to believe our story started with just one group home for six children in Iowa City. Today, we’re proud to support around 400 individuals throughout the region.

One of the original jobs at Employment Systems was making rugs.

Back in 1971, life looked very different for people with disabilities. Institutional living was the norm, children didn’t have the right to a free and fair education, and accessibility in public spaces was often nonexistent. People with disabilities were rarely included in everyday community life.

That’s what makes our story so special. A group of determined parents envisioned something better — a world where their children could live in a neighborhood, not an institution. They imagined homes where kids could grow up surrounded by community, supported by live-in “parents” who guided their daily lives. These parents believed their children deserved the chance to live as independently as possible, make friends, find jobs, and stay close to family.

With just one vote from the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, that dream became a reality — and the first home opened its doors.

Since then, a lot has changed. Homes no longer have live-in “parents”; instead, they’re supported by supervisors and staff. What was once a six-person home would now be considered large — most homes today have three or four adults living together. And what was once a bold idea — employment in the community — is now something we actively encourage and celebrate.

While our structure has evolved over the years, the heart of what we do remains the same. The passion and vision of our founding families still guide us today — in every new home we open, every conversation with lawmakers in Des Moines, and every new job or opportunity for someone we support.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who’s been part of our journey. Your support and belief in inclusive communities have made all the difference.

As we look ahead to our 55th anniversary next year, we’re planning some fun ways to celebrate — and we’d love for you to join us!
