Avery Finds a Home

Since Avery first joined Systems in 2014, his goal has always been to live as independently as possible. Because he lives with high anxiety, sharing a group home with housemates was especially challenging. It affected not only his comfort at home, but also his energy to participate in the activities he enjoys—such as attending the art program at Employment Systems. To better support his needs, Avery moved into a basement apartment in one of our homes, with specially trained staff just upstairs. When he settled into his new space, he needed several essentials to make it feel like home.

Thanks to our generous Giving Tree donors, we were able to provide various kitchen items, a bed, and bedding.

“It’s been great,” Avery’s Coordinator shared. “He’s working on his independence. He’s saving money, has his own bank card, and is much calmer overall. He’s even getting back to his day program regularly.”

Today, Avery can focus on goals like keeping his apartment clean and building friendships—rather than simply managing his anxiety. Generosity from our friends and families helped make that possible.

When we receive donations to the Giving Tree fund, we are not just providing a special Thanksgiving meal and gifts for people we serve. Once meals and presents are paid for, the money is put into a fund to help pay for essentials all year round, which is the money that helped Avery get started. It is a relief to know that our agency is able to support the people we serve in critical ways that are not covered by Medicaid.
