We have grown and evolved through the years, serving hundreds of people of all ages with disabilities and mental health needs in Eastern Iowa. More than 50 years ago, many adults and children with disabilities had few options for support services. That’s what inspired a group of Eastern Iowa parents to come together to try to solve this problem.
In 1971, this group of parents approached the Johnson County Board of Supervisors at a meeting. They proposed a new service model in which children were a part of the local community and would be supervised by live-in staff. With a one-vote advantage, Systems Unlimited opened its first home for children in Iowa City.
