How It Started

More than 50 years ago, many adults and children with disabilities had few options for support services. That’s what inspired a group of Eastern Iowa parents to come together to try to solve this problem.

In 1971, this group of parents approached the Johnson County Board of Supervisors at a meeting. They proposed a new service model in which children were a part of the local community and would be supervised by live-in staff. With a one-vote advantage, Systems Unlimited opened its first home for children in Iowa City.

Our mission to provide individualized care and promote independence continue to drive our services today.
