Like the old-time holiday tune goes…”it’s the most wonderful time of the year!” And so, it is time to deck our halls with the Holiday Giving Tree. Each year, the Systems Unlimited Giving Tree provides gifts to those individuals who otherwise would not receive a gift from family or other sources. This is a way to ensure that all of the people we serve have a happy holiday and have something to open on December 25th.
Last year over 100 individuals and families benefited from gifts and grocery gift cards through the Holiday Giving Tree. Those who made this possible were Systems staff, generous individuals we serve, our Board of Directors Members, the generous staff at Tippie College Business, and General Mills.
The Giving Tree will make its 2013 debut the first week in November in the Iowa City office. Gift Tags (with gift wishes) will be available on the tree starting November 13th. Wrapped gifts will be due back to the office by December 3rd in time for distribution in time for the holiday.
On Saturday, October 19th, Systems Unlimited hosted our third Annual Walk Fundraiser. This year, the Walk took on a new theme to celebrate Halloween…it was our spook-tacular Costume Walk.
The event took place at the Sycamore Mall in Iowa City. Volunteers arrived around 8 am to get things set up. Our volunteers this year were: Katie Cummins, Michele Lloyd, Haley Whitlach, Leah Whitlach, Janet Outlund, John Turner, Doug and Jackie Hart. Maggie Noonan and Casey Levigne from Inspire were instrumental in the organization of the Walk as well as volunteered the day of the event.
This year the Walk added 30 area vendors and crafters as well as System’s very own “costume shop”! The costumes were provided by Audrey Hill of Cedar Rapids who let our walkers choose from her vast collection of costumes. The Sycamore Mall graciously gave us store space for the day. Audrey and her daughter, Debbie, transformed the vacant shop into a wonderland of costumes. There were no tricks here; it was a real treat!
Another treat this year was the live music by Dan DiMonte! Soon after Dan set up and started playing, he quickly had a large crowd of all kinds of “characters” jamming out to his tunes. He even dressed up in a fun hat and accessories from the costume shop.
Proceeds will go towards purchasing a wheelchair accessible vehicle. This was a fun, family friendly fundraiser. Many of our staff and persons served participated in getting pledges and donating money as well as participated in the Walk. Many of the Systems Unlimited Board of Directors sponsored the event or made donations. Some of them even walked with their families in the event or volunteered. Many businesses in the Corridor helped to sponsor as well. Money from the Walk is still coming in so we do not have an official total to report yet.
The Walk Planning Committee worked very hard this year to make this a successful fundraiser. This team was made up of: Michelle Lloyd, Mona Dowiat, Haley Whitlach, Katie Cummins, Jenny O’Brien, Brianne Stevenson, Jessica Marie, Melanie Matiyabo, John Turner, and Cheli Morgan.
Thanks to all who supported this event; you made it strides above the rest! Plans are already underway for next year’s event….plan to join us for our 5K!
Anyone who would still like to purchase the official 2013 Walk tie-dye t-shirt or make a donation, can do so by contacting Cheli Morgan at 319-338-9212 ext 194 or email at c.morgan[at]sui.org.
